Many tourist confuse Kathmandu with Nepal while many trekkers consider a general overview of a country which is not limited to its Capital, no matter how beautiful, nor to its mountains, no matter how grand.

The Country.

Nepal is situated between two giants, Tibet to the north and India along the rest of the borders, Tibet is (under the Chinese rule since 1951), Nepal has had a paradoxical history compared to the other countries in the region. It is, for instance, one of the only countries that has never been under any foreign rule, and also date is still the largest Himalayan kingdom. a fact partly due to its geographical location.

The High Mountain Kingdom.

While the terrain is quite diverse, the topography of Nepal is rather simple. It is commonly divided into six large geographical regions, from the northwest to the southeast and from south to north. The flat, narrow strip of land along the border with India is the Terai which forms part of the flood plains of the Ganges River. This humid and tropical region was until quite recently a barely habitable swamp, infested with the malaria mosquito. However malaria has since been brought under control, the land has been cleared, and rice as well as sugarcane are now being cultivated on the Terrai's fertile alluvial terraces. The siwalik range is an area of low range hills with a maximum height of 2,000m where forest prevail. Valleys here are called duns.

Further north, the Mahabharat lekh rang or the middles hills about 3,000m is divided by a series of endless steep ridges formed by small streams. Then comes the pahad or middle country also called the Nepalese middle plateau, but is in fact a region of low mountains below 2,000m, cut by important valleys such as the Kathmandu or Pokhara valley. The high altitude region is dominated by the Himalaya. Throughout Nepal there are ten peaks measuring more then 8,000m and about 250 peaks measuring 7,000m. The highest mountains are found mostly in central Nepal and eastern Nepal.

However, this great wall is not impassable. It is cut through, from the north to the south, by three of Nepal's most important river (Karnali, Kali Gandagi and Sapta koshi), as well as many smaller ones. In Addition, there are twenty passes which enable one to cross over, on foot as well as car, for intance through the Kodari pass 1,663m, which via the Araniko Highway, links Nepal to Tibet.

Last but not least, in the northern part of the country is a region formed by a range of valleys and low mountains around 6,000m. This region, called the Trans-Himalaya, is dry with a barren landscape similar to the Tibetan high-plateau. This region is not dominated by the monsoon which otherwise prevails over the rest of the Country.
